Our Philosophy...
Raven EcoVentures specialize in guided, nature-oriented wilderness adventures
emphasizing low ecological impact, conservation and sustainability. Raven EcoVentures
promotes human powered travel such as canoeing/kayaking, hiking, biking, skiing,
dog sledding and snowshoeing. The intent is to provide a rewarding and educational
wilderness experience while creating a better understanding of the world's wild
places, our connection to them and the sustainability of the natural environment.
What we offer...
Raven EcoVentures offers wilderness cabin getaways on a private lake (this
is the only cabin on the lake). It is very quiet and an inspiring location to
paint, practice photography and view curious wildlife (deer, moose, otters,
beaver, marten, bear, wolves, red fox). Whether you are an individual looking
for a peaceful and inspiring place to reflect, a couple seeking a romantic getaway
or a family with children looking for a summer cabin, Raven EcoVentures will
meet your needs. Since the cabin is the only one on the lake, you can be assured
to be alone, without discovering other people intruding on your solitude. Opportunities
are endless for summer activities such as canoeing, kayaking, hiking, biking
and in the winter, kick and dog sledding, skiing, snowshoeing, winter camping
and theme fondue parties.
Raven EcoVentures also offers guided and/or outfitted canoe and kayak trips
along the CA/US border lakes, into Quetico Provincial Park (A world renowned
wilderness canoeing park) or east of the park. No previous canoe/kayak experience
is necessary to participate in these adventures. Instruction and safety procedures
as well as equipment orientation will be provided. If you are interested in
learning about local wildlife, edible and medicinal plants, old growth white and
red pine stands and general ecology you may be interested in an ecology hike.
The experience...
Imagine traveling by canoe as the Indians/Natives, fur traders and explorers
did years ago, through remote wilderness lakes, rivers and portages where you
today still may see very few people for days. The absolute silence
and feeling of peace are unforgettable. There are no logging operations, lodges
or any form of development in Quetico Park and since no motorboats are allowed
you can escape the disturbance of motorboats. Quetico is an Ojibway word, which
means "ancient spirit of beauty". This meaning is well suited as it is a place
where nature remains in its natural state untouched by the harsh imprint of
modern man. Quetico Park is located on the Canadian Shield typical of rocky
outcrops lining the lakes, which make ideal campsites and are great for a swim
after a long days paddle. Above all the rocks, the shorelines are fringed with
old growth windswept pines creating a very picturesque landscape providing inspiration
to many artists, painters and writers, such as The Group of Seven.

About the Owners/Guides
The Walshe family are the primary owners/guides of Raven EcoVentures. They
have had extensive experience living, working and canoeing over 30 years in
Quetico Provincial Park, a wilderness-canoeing park in Northern Ontario. Shan
Walshe (father) was head park naturalist in the park for over 20 years. Shan
instilled in them a great love and appreciation for the outdoors, particularly
large tracts of pristine wilderness areas. Now a legend to Quetico, Shan was
their main inspiration for starting this business. The Walshes have also spent
a significant amount of time exploring the area east of Quetico by canoe. They
have had years of experience working as botanists, wildlife biologists, researchers,
teachers and wilderness explorers in the boreal forest across Canada. They have
researched black bears, wolves, fisher, wolverine, moose and woodland caribou.
The Walshes have also spent a number of years working and canoeing in Woodland
Caribou Provincial Park near Red Lake, Ontario.
